when we first moved here, we removed all the yucky old carpets ourselves and polished the floorboards.. the baltic pine was in great condition as it had mostly been covered over

I pulled up the carpet and underlay (underlay stapled to the floor) in one of our previous houses (all the carpeted areas except for 2 brms). Ready for new carpet.
The (carpeted) bathroom was the worst. They had used up small pieces of underlay in there. There were heaps of staples to remove.. The long hallway was easy..big long strips just pull up and roll it as I went along (long pieces of underlay & carpet..not many staples to remove).

i've done that too, a good idea is to advertise the carpet as free, then you get others to help pull it up

The bathroom and laundry floors have terrible vinyl that is lifting up everywhere, cracking and even when it is freshly washed, never looks clean [it will be replaced this year with lovely tiles.]. Nothing was used as underlay so the vinyl was glued straight onto the floorboards. The things people do.

removing the staples is a pain AC.. and it takes forever. they used to use so many in carpet laying... not to mention all the dirt and dust that collect underneath.

I decided the other day that I wanted to get back into a walking routine and I asked my son if he wanted to come along and get some exercise, seeing as he works at a desk all day. Surprisingly he agreed to it!
So, yesterday I waited until he got home from work and we did the scenic route here. I had already made up my mind then that I would prefer to walk in the cool of the morning when it's nice and quiet and he agreed to that. I was so surprised this morning when he woke him early and asked him if he was coming along, and he did! I'm not sure how long this will last but it's a nice time so far.

Times like that can be so special, Joono - quite apart from the exercise from the walk itself. I hope he continues to be as enthusiastic.

we got the majority of the carpet out while we were still renting this house, and all of the replastering in the living room, and dining room , along with painting...and removing the godawful flocked wallpaper from those rooms and the library, lol! then we took out layers and layers of lino in the 3 front rooms...mind you, this was all slow work, since michael and i were caterers then, and curtis worked 12 hour days. keeping the carpet in the music room was mostly for soundproofing, and we don't need that now, so it goes. the horrendous racecourse wallpaper is already gone, lol! tomorrow is the biggie...moving all of our albums into the library... THEN i can bribe my neighbor to help me pull it, and the pad and burlap, and get it to the dumpster. strangely won't be happy, she likes to use that shag to sharpen her claws, but she'll get over it. she'll still have her bamboo pad that her food/water bowls are on in there. THEN wil lcome the layers of lino in there, the bathroom and the kitchen...i iz SKEERED of that..

I helped DD pull up her carpet (2 levels and stairs) when she recarpeted before she sold her last home. It is a huge job just with the pulling let alone the rolling and then getting rid of it. I hope I never have to do it again.

i hope you and i both will never have to do it again. or anyone we know. believe me, i WILL be whining about back and knee pain , even with the help lasagna bribes will get me, lol! and i AM grateful that wichita's favorite grandson will pull up all the staples, in trade for quench gum and being allowed to play with the music station for a whole month! * he's a great kid,and talented, curtis would let him anyway. but he likes to earn things, which is pretty cool.*

Golly, I'm exhausted after simply reading all that. I wish we had floorboards, but alas, our floors are all concrete so carpet or some kind of covering is a necessity.

Over the months when I accompanied DD house hunting, I lost count of the number of young female agents who traipsed across wood floors leaving stiletto marks. There would have been a few house sellers a bit cross at the end of the open house.

Penny, we have concrete floors but our floorboards were glued and laid on. They are proper floorboards, not those veneer ones. It cost an outrageous fortune but I'm glad we did it now. We've been in this house well over ten years now and we've never had a problem with them.
My only regret is that we only used carpet in the boys rooms for warmth and comfort.
Edit to add that our wet areas are tiled.

Hubby is a carpet layer..........(he only does it for friends and family now......... as he has..........funnily enough..........carpet layers knee)
To get the staples out he uses the back of a spade.

My niece (+ OH, 3 kids and a puppy, warm climate) have just removed all the carpet from the rooms that had it.. every room is now wooden floating floors? Whatever it is called, the rooms that had that from new (about 13 yrs ago) still look pretty good.

We went out and had a look abut half an hour ago. There was only a tiny white tip uncovered. It was awesome.
