Middle son (the Brisbane one) had to spend yesterday in iso after one of his friends got Covid. He got his neg result this morning. Luckily he had been planning a fairly quiet Christmas anyway, but still pretty horribly for him.
(his exposure was after we left thankfully)

Wow Deb. That's really scary, especially since so many people get together during the holidays. To think you're safe and mingle with lots of people is a horrible place to be.

I received an alert today saying I was in the grocery store at the same time as a covid positive person last Friday. This is the 3rd time I have received an alert.

Contact tracers are swamped here..
Canberrans who know they have interacted with a COVID-19 case are expected to make their own judgement about whether they are a close or casual contact, with strained contact tracing teams taking days to notify...

It's getting very messy. People from ACT travelling to QLD have to get a negative covid test within 72 hrs of travelling there. Yet QLD has more covid cases than ACT. When my daughter traveled there recently there wasn't anyone at the airport to even check the incoming passengers had the required test results. ACT won't do covid tests for travellers now as the testing stations are swamped with testing close contacts...waiting time can be hours.

What's the latest regarding close contact and isolation?
The elderly couple in our back villa have tested positive.
He was taken to hospital at 1am this morning with angina pain.
They tested him x 2 and both came back Positive. I spoke with him
at the front door Christmas day, and her Monday. No symptoms here
so do we need to isolate?

Lyn. i don't know the official details, they change every day, maybe they are online somewhere, but i think close contact now is living with someone.....also the virus is contagious for 5 days and not after that.....if it was me, i would not worry unless i had very serious symptoms, (i don't care if i get it)..... maybe if you have definite symptoms and are worried, isolate and get tested...but don't take what i say as gospel, try to find the details somewhere we are all going to contract it in some form eventually, and we have to live with it or some future virus....i heard this morning that preparations are already being made for some new pandemic in the near future
also today is the 2 year anniversary of the first notification of covid19 to the world (including trump who did nothing until march 2020)

new changes are going to be announced tonight....that's what i mean, they change every day What are the changes and when do they kick in?
New definition of close contact: Someone who has spent at least four hours in a household or a care facility with a positive case. Workplaces do not count.
New isolation period: Positive people and close contacts must isolate for seven days or 10 in SA
Timing: NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and the ACT will implement the changes at midnight.
Tasmania will follow on January 1 while the Northern Territory and Western Australia will not adopt the scheme until they get more Covid cases in the weeks ahead. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10354745/Scott-Morrison-announces-MAJOR-change-close-contact-rules.html

they have to make drastic changes because it is costing the country too much and this cost cannot be sustained

I almost wish I could just get the damned virus and be done with it, but I doubt my spouse would survive a run-in with it, so for him I have to be careful. I think they should continue with the check-in app and notifications if you have been at the same venue as a positive case. It gives you the option to be extra careful around your oldies or infirm for a few days.

I agree Clara, amazing how many idiots have ditched the masks whilst shopping.
An hour or so discomfort with the mask, and they can't be bothered.
My son bought up a home testing kit, all good. The wife who has a tracheotomy has
now been taken by ambo to Hospital. He, the husband walked out of the hospital at
lunch time and came home to take her to be tested. This is crazy!

well, an "expert" on the radio just now said the govt went too far on the easing of restrictions last night..."we don't know enough about the new variant", and he was emphasising the vulnerability of first australians also and their slow vaccination rate

Haven't heard anything regarding the elderly folk. No-one has been there to
check on him today. They may have returned him to Hospital during the night.

My daughters partner is getting tested for covid today. He flew to Melbourne after Christmas to visit his family for 2 days. One of his friends there has tested positive. OH & I haven't seen him since Christmas Day but our other daughter visiting us has been out with them since Chistmas.

Figlet, that's a huge problem, that people are exposed because of other people who were exposed. My husband played golf with one of his buddies last week. The guy called him two days after the golf game, to tell him that he had tested positive. So then we had to decide, do we cancel our Christmas plans? We let the kids know and let them decide if they still wanted to come over. They all did and so far no one has shown any signs of being sick.

My husband has been sick for the last three days.
Headache and cough.
We have isolated ourselves.
Don't know if it's Covid.
So cold here that we don't want to go out.
Guess we will give it the old wait and see.

That's a bit worrying Goblins, those symptoms appear in the covid list.
Apparently they have sent the elderly couple home to isolate. I'm
surprised with the elderly women she really battles without covid.

I heard today that two of our friends here have covid. They are isolating now. I was talking to him on Wednesday at the Post Office but only briefly and we were outside, so 🤞
My hay fever is much better today so I’m not really worried.

I spoke to the elderly chap on the phone and asked if they were OK.
He was coughing and spluttering. I have offered to get shopping if
they need anything and text when I leave it on the front patio. He
said they (the health people) have been calling them daily.

I'm surprised she was allowed home. She is really fragile, so terribly
thin and unsteady on her feet.

likely because she has been exposed and they don't want to risk her spreading it in a facility, and the beds are being reserved for critical cases
