I don't have any suggestions apart from Googling but I think you will need to get some temporary shade for the plants usually shaded by that tree until the replacement grows enough or you might lose them too. :(

I just bought 2 Kardinal rose bushes from Swanes in Sydney. I pick them up this weekend. They are already potted so I should get roses this year :)

that is great prim.
our roses have not long started flowering and it is a good show this year. at the back of the roses i have iris yellow and white planted all the way along the fence line and they are just flowering now so it looks beautiful.

That sounds beautiful Carmella. I had many roses at our last house but when we moved here there were only 2 established bushes. I always pruned them according to the rule book and though I got roses, they were never plentiful. Then OH decided he wanted to prune them. I kept quiet and let him go even though it was done the complete opposite to how they should be pruned. We have never had so many roses on our bushes, ever. Whatever he is doing wrong, it is working.
I did read once where someone's roses were being nibbled at by neighbours horses (or cows, I can't remember now) and they said their roses flowered better than when they pruned them carefully.
Having said that, I think I will prune the Kardinals for the time being. :)

This year my OH gave them a hard prune back as he calls it and this is the best year for flowering. we used to have natives until a neighbour called in a said they saw a snake go in there. so all the natives went and the roses and iris are in plus i have it planted up with bulbs 4'o clockers, fresias, jonquils, garlic, and throw poppy seeds in. plus those little white daisy plants they come up every year. the best thing is it keeps the weeds down having it that full.
if i have to do any weeding there it is like once year.

We accidentally bought those little white daisies here in pots etc. when we moved. They spread and were even coming up in the lawn. I haven't through about them for quite a while and I have just realised I haven't seen them for a long time. I can only assume they have all died off, which is unusual. I like them but they were becoming a pest. Maybe something in this garden liked them to extinction?
Only crawly thing here is our blue tongue. She did have babies but I have not seen them so far so they may have moved on. If I see a snake, everything is coming out!!

i reckon this year will be bad for snakes. i hate to say.

that rose might be available here in the next few years by the looks of it.. not now though
it might be worth asking the man you know for a cutting... most gardeners really like to keep old plants going and get new ones started

i would really love a geradlton wax , but the soil is the biggest problem here and frosts.
they like a sandy loamy soil where ours is more clay.

deb, i don't know what the climate number is where you live, but you might look at leyland or murray cypress trees, they grow SUPER fast here!

thanks Sin. I'll have a look.. my tree is all gone now
I've decided to plant a grevillia along the fence to block out the view of the neighbours place and I still need a shrub that grows 6-7 ft high ( to shade the veranda a bit)

you're welcome, deb. i think you'd like the leyland ones, they can be pruned into cool shapes too. as for a shrub, what about a bridal wreath bush? they're pretty, they smell nice, they grow fast, and they are beloved by butterflies, hummingbirds, and little girls with dolly weddings to set up!

something for you to think about, then! my favorite guy at the garden show, he makes them for fun, and started selling them in a florist shop just for money to make more. the florist convinced him to show them, and raise the price, and he sold out in the first day of the show his first year! he uses the extra money to go on vacations and such. i got him to go north and see the trollway in wisconsin, and i'm going to tell him about all the cool gnome gardens that y'all have shown me , i'm betting he'd love to go to oz!

Kardinals are ready for pick up but now I am not. The lady at the garden centre assured me the will be watered and well looked after until I can pick them up next Monday.
