wow... now that wasn't what I expected Party / Coalition Votes Percentage % Swing % Liberal/National Coalition 5,198,463 50.89 +0.53 Australian Labor Party 5,017,509 49.11 -0.53 around 200,000 votes did it looks like they believed Clive and the happy clapper.in Qld., Abbott gone and that probably suits the Libs.. but a swing TO Dutton?? unreal?

Thanks Joono - I'm glad to know I'm not the only non citizen. I can vote, though - got onto the electoral role the same way as you Kay. I came here as an assisted migrant (10 pound Pom) and have never taken out citizenship. I figure I was invited here by the Australian Government, married an Aussie and am now the matriarch of a whole dynasty of Australians. I've lived and payed taxes here for 56 years and I think I've done my bit for the country and don't need to swear an oath or wave a flag to prove my loyalty.

I also felt I had already declared my allegiance to Australia by my life experience. However at the time I was living in Canberra, at the beginnings of the modern Liberals xenophobia, and had to become a citizen to be able to work for the government. John Howard made me do it and I have never really forgiven him. At the time I asked my husband and sons, all born Australians, to answer the citizenship questions I had to, and I scored much better than all of them.

So many people who haven’t lived a dual (or more) national life have no idea how it is possible to love more than one country. I think that is one of the major problems in our world today. Nationalism is so dangerous to all of us.

More random thoughts (because I’m in a reflective mood)
I really don’t understand the “anyone but Shorten” thing. Anytime I’ve asked people what they actually mean by that they haven’t been able to answer me. Sure, he doesn’t have the charisma of a Hawke, or the novelty of a Gillard (and he has a terrible running style), but really what was the problem with him?

(Still being reflective) Why is it that people in warmer climates tend to be more conservative?

Queenslanders! Really?
A man set fire to himself on Manus. Their only hope was a change of government - now that has been lost. I shake my head at stupid Australians and weep for my friends on Manus.

updated stats::
Senator Doug Cameron Verified account
The “miracle” has seen the Libs sweet in to a narrow majority. As it stands now the difference is 181,454 votes across the nation. Hardly a ringing endorsement for the @liberalaus Over 5million Australians backed a progressive Labor agenda. We must stay strong and progressive.

(Still being reflective) Why is it that people in warmer climates tend to be more conservative? it also applies to the further away from the coast/cities the more conservative and the more redneck
but to answer your question, the southeast is fairly moderate, and all the rest, which is a big area, are conservative, even along the coast.....when hanson first showed her ugly face, 25% the wide bay area voted for her

my belief is he didn't really want to win seats anyway Ava... he won votes from disaffected liberal voters and handed them back to the liberals.... what he really wants is to open a big mine next to Adani. which he will no doubt get the license to do now

I wonder whether Palmer actually has the money for all his grandiose schemes or whether it's all going to come crashing down around his ears again - like Queensland Nickel and his dinosaur park and the first Titanic replica. He is already up to his neck in a court case with that Chinese Company hat could cost him big time if it doesn't go his way. I'd also love to know where all the money really came from to fund his electioneering adverts.

Looking at the news and hearing that Labor’s campaign being too detailed is one of the reasons for the swing against them really depresses me. I really don’t want to make my voting decisions based on who holds up the shiniest bauble. But I suspect that’s all we are going to get in the future.

That’s right deb, by holding up shiny baubles. That’s exactly what I mean. People are becoming too disengaged to think with any depth about what they are actually voting for.
