The main problem with not having private insurance is the long wait for 'elective' surgery. We are with Medibank Private and at our age I don't think we'll be cancelling it. Mr Penny had an asthma attack while we were in Palmerston (NT) last year and had to be taken by ambulance to Darwin Hospital. It cost over $750 but luckily our policy covered it.

this bloke is unreal
A high-profile fund manager leading an assault against Labor's changes to franking credits once boasted about using a taxpayer-funded inquiry to maximise the chances of defeating the policy.
In an audio recording obtained by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, veteran fund manager Geoff Wilson claims he contacted Liberal MP Tim Wilson to ask for parliamentary hearings into Labor's proposed changes to be scheduled at the same time as of one his own six-monthly investor roadshows.
The franking credits inquiry is unusual in that parliamentary committees do not usually investigate opposition policies. About $160,000 in public funding is being spent on venues, accommodation and travel.
It can also be revealed Mr Wilson and Geoff Wilson are related: the MP's great grandfather is the fund manager's grandfather.
see how sneaky they are in using tax payers money as an advantage to themselves, their families and their friends
it all started last weekend when people tried to register for these meetings on a website (stoptheretirementtax) and found that when they tried to register, they couldn't untick boxes that made them also sign up to signing a petition and to recieve liberal party propaganda and to help stop the tax
Wilson said it was a glitch ( though the website had been up and running for 3 months).
shonky as!

So much shonkiness.
Just been reading about this man.
"Billionaire political donor and Beijing's former top lobbyist in Australia, Huang Xiangmo, has been stranded overseas after Australian officials declared him unfit to hold an Australian passport, and cancelled his permanent residency."

We have Health Fund hospital and extras cover.
Didn't some health funds already remove some major hospital cover benefits in the last year?..e.g. hip/knee joint replacements operations from policies that weren't top cover hospital?

The former ex took out private health cover when he needed to have a cyst removed - I had a haemangioma removed a couple of years earlier and had to deal with the public health system. I ended up in Box Hill Hospital which was referred to back then as "The Box Hill Butchers". I was almost given the wrong op because the surgeon who was a Mr Freud [lol] wrote down the wrong thing but the nurse caught it in time.
After the former ex moved out and I was granted the DSP. I couldn't afford private hospital cover.

It looks as though Shorten is contemplating a compromise with Morriscum over the Urgent Medical Evacuation bill.

I wonder why and what they'll come up with,, something has to be done
would've prefered Labour to back the Phelps bill

Shorten will want something that he will be comfortable with when he becomes the new PM in May. Cathy Gowan and the Labor Party hold the lives of innocent, damaged people in their hands. They shouldn't be playing political games with them.
Perhaps, Shorten will agree to the doctors not being independent or the PM having the final say and not the courts if Morriscum calls a snap election.

Its very disappointing. Yet, again, refugees are being treated as political footballs. If the bill fails, it is going to become increasingly hard to keep them alive.

lots of fun and games going on... especially with Tim Wilson... what a shonk he is "":So the Government should be able to provide some facts here. But Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton's office was unable to do so, though it noted media reports about alleged criminal activity by some individuals."" what the??? For example, Mr Dutton said that "doctors including Dr Bob Brown and Dr Richard Di Natale, potentially, can provide the advice". some pretty desperate nonsense coming from the Govt... Roll on May!

The chair of a taxpayer funded government inquiry has been referred by Labor to the Australian Federal Police after being accused of sharing the details of voters with a high-profile fund manager as part of a co-ordinated campaign against Labor's franking credit policy. Multiple voters who registered to attend the parliamentary inquiry are outraged that they are now receiving advertising material from Wilson Asset Management, a company that has $3 billion in funds under management, some of which could be put at risk if Labor wins the next election. Mr Wilson and his distant relative Geoff Wilson, who owns Wilson Asset Management, have co-ordinated protests, petitions and voter information to maximise the political hit on Labor's policy that would see up to 900,000 retired non-taxpaying shareholders lose a tax refund worth thousands of dollars each year. Mr Wilson has also declared his investment in two seperate funds run by Wilson Asset Management. Liberal MPs have thrown their support behind Mr Wilson. North Sydney MP Trent Zimmerman, who used taxpayer funding to robocall voters in his electorate said the tactics had resulted in strong attendance at Friday's meeting in Chatswood, which began with a protester labelling the hearing a "scam". "It is a role model for future inquiries," said Mr Zimmerman. Liberal MP Jason Falinksi said there was no politicking involved. "The inquiry is a straight-up inquiry," he said. Liberal MP Craig Kelly, another member of the committee, said he thought it was perfectly reasonable for the party to raise funds off the back of the taxpayer-funded $160,000 inquiry after The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age revealed the Liberal Party was using it to drive donations. "Labor’s ongoing smear campaign won’t work," he said. "The allegations that data has been transferred are false. The only reason that Wilson Assset Management have any data is because people have chosen to send it to them by signing Wilson Assset Management's petition against the retirement tax. That is their choice, and we respect that.” Half-a-dozen voters who either live in Mr Wilson's electorate or registered to attend the inquiry have complained of receiving unsolicited correspondence from the fund manager promoting their product and urging them to campaign against Labor's policy. Correspondence seen by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age shows Wilson Asset portfolio managers touting their outlooks to voters, following emails from Geoff Wilson urging people to attend the inquiry and invitations from the Liberal Party to attend $220-a-head Liberal fundraiser on the back of the inquiry. In one email to a constituent related to the inquiry Mr Wilson said he had "a big influence over finance and tax since I am the chair of the House committee on economics". Geoff Wilson confirmed late on Friday that he had partly funded the government website. OMG they've admitted to it all.. the only reason Wilson Assett Management was able to data mine was that people were unable to unmark permanently "ticked"boxes on the registration forms as I mentioned in a post last week
