Such happy news. Craig Foster is a champ.
I was a little too optimistic about Aziz's freedom. He has been given permission to go to Geneva for two weeks where he will be presented with an award. I really can't imagine him willingly go back to Manus so watch this space. He will be telling the world about what has been happening on Manus.
Speaking of which, the Phelps bill is due to be voted on this afternoon in the Lower House. Shorten has signed off on three compromises which he will take to the party room. Political games that play with people's lives should not happen. Pass the bloody bill and start addressing the physical and psychological damage that has been done. It is probably too late for my friend and many others but at least bring them here for proper treatment.
It won't create an influx of boats. It is the towing back of boats that has slowed down the boat arrivals and not the cruel and inhumane experiment that is indefinite detention. Something like 90 -95% of the men on Manus have been granted refugee status. They have already been scrutinised and been deemed to be of good character, as well as it being unsafe for them to return to their homelands, hence, they have been granted refugee status. Accusing them of being rapists and paedophiles is both inflammatory and defamatory.
I was afraid that something like this would happen - that there would be back-flipping in the interim. it will be a tense afternoon.

morrison makes me sick, he is taking all the credit for the release
the fact is that his attempts failed, Hakeem was going to be immediately sent to Bahrain, and what changed just in time was a letter written last week by the cave rescue doctors....they previously said they would not intervene, they did not believe in tit for tat, i.e. look what we did for you, now do something for us....but they realised that they must do something as it was urgent

Morriscum would take credit for the rescuing of the Titanic survivors if he thought it would advance him politically.

Morriscum would take credit for the rescuing of the Titanic survivors if he thought it would advance him politically. After it had been shown that he built the bloody ship!

AC I'm not sure what the 3 compromises are... I know that the minister will have the final say over the doctors advice is one.. but I'm not sure if that's even a change but a clarification. keep in mind that we'll have a change of Govt., and a fairer minister... It won't be Dutton that has the final say the press are also beating up the story saying Labor is backing down
Labor says the bill WILL be passed this afternoon
I'll be watching QT today.. for sure

From Link
Mr Abdul Aziz Muhamat (Papua New Guinea/Australia) Abdul Aziz Muhamat (Aziz), from Sudan, is a compelling and tireless advocate for refugee rights. Seeking asylum, he has been held in Australian immigration detention on Manus Island, Papua New Guinea since October 2013, when his boat was intercepted by the Australian authorities. Aziz has seen friends die. He has been shot at by local police. He was also sent to a local prison for refusing to eat in protest at the cruelty and suffering being inflicted on others. Aziz is one of the primary public voices among the men held on Manus Island. Despite the isolated location, he has exposed the harsh conditions there through podcasts and media interviews. He has paid a price for this as he is seen as a “ring leader” by both the PNG and Australian authorities.

I just really like this tweet
After listening to @scottmorrisonmp I feel I should be terrified of everything and everybody.
Naturally I figure I should put @scottmorrisonmp and his odious Govt at the top of that list. Any Govt that displays that level of paranoia needs counselling, not power.

He, Behrouz and Amir were known as "ringleaders" because they became the spokesmen for Manus. Last night, one of the refugees was beaten by a local and this morning, Hellside House was attacked by locals. This is the company responsible for the security for th edetention centres on Manus. www.afr.com/news/policy/foreign-affairs/bad-debts-failed-contracts-across-asia-trail-manus-contractor-paladin-20190211-h1b4khFeb 11, 2019 — 11.45pm Save Share The key beneficiary of a $423 million government contract to provide security for refugees on Manus Island left a string of bad debts and failed contracts across Asia, raising further questions about how the Paladin group won such a lucrative tender. As pressure builds on the government to explain the hefty cost of its offshore processing regime, further details have emerged about the Paladin founder, Craig Thrupp, and his time in East Timor and Indonesia.

I hope you're right, Deb. When the Lower House vote on the Phelps bill was delayed, my heart sank, and as it has turned out, with good reason. Looks like th ebill won't be voted on until around 4 pm. Its going to be a long day....

Really? I earlier heard Di Natale say that the Greens will not support the Labor compromises. They must have changed their minds.
Hakeem is back in Melbourne! Yay!

Not just Paladin but Serco, Wilson and any other company who has profiteered from the inhumane treatment of our fellow human beings, funded by our governments - past and present.

geez!!! so Labor worked out a deal with the crossbenchers and they were happy to go ahead with it today..... but then the Greens weren't happy with it, so Labor spent the day negotiating with the Greens on it and now the Govt claims their legal advice from Christian Porter rules the bill as unconstitutional and calls it a "money" bill which only the Govt can pass
btw Cathy McGowan has announced that she will also support the bill
I say go ahead and legislate the bill... let the courts deal with the fallout later
It will be interesting to see what happens next

It has to go back to the Senate because of today's amendments so unless the LNP have more tricks up their sleeves, it will just be a formality.

I was laughing and crying and laughing and crying. So many emotions, This has been a long time coming. It has taken years of persistence and honesty to get it across to people exactly how dire the situation actually is. Kerryn Phelps is amazing.

I thought that Morriscum was going to invoke the wrath of god. He was apoplectic"Why undo what isn't broken!" lol A win for the men and a win for those on Nauru and a win for humanity. Jeez, its been a long and intense day. How was that sneaky AG, pulling a swifty like that? I am so glad that the Speaker has some integrity and nipped that in the bud. I loved the way he was outplayed. I thought that Tony Burke was great. lol
