communication was the biggest problem AC... it's buried somewhere in the Royal Commission report... no-one knew who was responsible for what... the dispute is current... stemming from that RC report
hope we never, ever see another day like that one.. so much loss of life

Good article on the tax cuts here by Ross Gittins
Most people don't realise it, but we're on the verge of letting foreign multinationals pay less tax on the profits they earn in Australia because we locals don't mind paying higher tax to make up the difference.

Two different communication systems, that were incompatible, were used by the city and country emergency services. The call centres could not cope with the influx of calls and neither could the telcos. Calls were being diverted to centrelink as a backup. Communications were woeful at the time but, then, noone envisioned the firestorm that was on its way. Hard lessons were learned.

I thought that the recent ongoing dispute was about the UFU seeking deals for the paid firefighters that could cause a mass exodus of volunteer firefighters by making them feel second-rate and undervalued. I also thought that a deal had recently been reached.

also.. Mr Turnbull will be pulling out what's left of his hair when he reads this leaked Business Council survey
Fewer than one in five of Australia's leading chief executives say they will use the Turnbull government's proposed company tax cut to directly increase wages or employ more staff, according to a secret survey conducted by the Business Council of Australia.
More than 80 per cent said they would either use the proceeds to boost returns to shareholders or invest in the company.
we all knew it they've just confirmed it LOL

Odd how he is so up in arms about it. The original story said nothing about either of the women being employed by him or his wife and it included his denial of knowing them. I'd like to know how it was in the public's best interest to allow the visas to be altered. Because they admitted to intending to work just doesn't cut it.

Also, the original story only mentioned one woman. A quick phone call was made to someone which resulted in her visa being altered so that she wasn't deported. I wonder who was called? I wish that our Prime Minister would actually be a leader instead of a puppet.

they must be "au pairs'' for another politician...(or someone Dutton knows)
not really "au pairs"
or a woman from a wealthy overseas family
Maggie. Dutton used his family to deflect from it when asked in QT yesterday. (The au pairs are nothing to do with his family) he also threatened the journo

Dutton - That sure was fishy. He's very hard nosed about using his privilege to overturn decisions in most cases put before him.
Home Affairs Minister is expected to face more questions on Tuesday over his decision to use ministerial discretion to grant visas on public interest grounds to two young tourists who came to Australia to perform baby-sitting duties.

If you enter another country on a tourist visa and admit you intend to work (even if they suspect you're there to work).. then you're not allowed in and sent back to where you came from.
My youngest went in and out of UK 3 times in a year/13 months ... the third time the Border staff gave her a long grilling.. thought she was at risk of overstaying (she was going to stay with friends there), suspicious about her working there...they did let her in. First two visits were related to Uni student exchange (in Spain but she entered UK first and holidayed there after too).

It shouldn't be too hard to find out who contacted whom since Dutton's list of people who are completely dead to him must be growing by the second, which means that only a handful of people will be left to choose from.

The border staff person who was there at the time.. thought it was very odd.. .. how her e-visa was cancelled/not allowed entry... then she made a call.... and then she got a tourist visa (not sure of the timeframe for that bit). Miracle if it happened within hours of her arrival?
In an investigation surely they could find out.. who she called, and who they called etc.... Very odd that a random overseas (unskilled) person coming in on an e-visa.. knew a person in high places to call.- that is where this story will fall down, imo.
There was two of them that this happened to.. not at the same time. One of them had had trouble getting into Australia before.

I read that the all the information was handed over for the inquiry but that relevant details were redacted to protect the privacy of others or some such excuse.

Oh yes, I saw that too - the media/public don't need the personal details but someone investigating it does.??

yeah, it's very odd, especially when it involves Mr Border Force. who's never had any kindness in his nature 2 seperate girls, six months apart in 2015.... Barnaby reckons Dutton is a man of integrity though

"If there's one thing I'd never doubt, it's Peter Dutton's integrity," Mr Joyce told reporters in Canberra.
He's got to be kidding, right?

No, both women have come and gone without overstaying their visas, according to Dutton. AAP journos investigated for 2 years before breaking the story a few days ago.

I read that the all the information was handed over for the inquiry but that relevant details were redacted to protect the privacy of others or some such excuse. I was wrong. Sort of. Sorry. ["inquiry" should be replaced with "investigation"] There was a hearing before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal earlier this month over the redaction of names in material provided to the journo through FOI. AAP said that she did not want the au pair's name and that by providing the employer's details would not be a breach of her privacy. The AAT's decision is still pending.

I don't know why they're referred to as babysitters either. au pair, - live in, meals provided and a small allowance?
They both must have been coming here (on a no working visa) to jobs they had already secured ...for whom? For one of them at least, for an employer who can pull strings in the Immigration/Border Control dept.
One of those females had tried to get into Australia before and failed... Wouldn't be normal to be allowed in next time either.
