I'm currently working my way through a series of crime novels set in Venice and written by an English woman who lives there. One of the things that comes across strongly in the books is how Italians not only assume their politicians and all government officials are corrupt, but also accept there is nothing they can do about it. I'm beginning to think Australia is not far behind.

We’re in the middle of planning a trip for later in the year. I wonder if I should call Andrew Burnes to book our flights?

this just makes me sick that the liberals are stacking all the boards before they get the boot.
there should be a rule that no party can make appointments 6 months before an election... I've also read that George Brandis's ambassadorship finishes at the end of 2019... but the libs have just extended his contract for another another 5 years

I get the feeling that Kerryn Phelps is shocked by the shonky way the Libs play. Prof Kerryn Phelps AM @drkerrynphelps 8h8 hours ago More The Law Council of Australia has raised serious concerns regarding the Federal Government’s processes in appointing members to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT), describing it as secretive with the potential to undermine public confidence www.lawcouncil.asn.au/media/media-releases/aat-appointments-must-be-transparent-and-merit-based …

and again
Finance Minister Mathias Cormann charged taxpayers more than $3,700 for a charter flight from Sydney to Canberra after having lunch with the French President.
The cabinet minister in charge of keeping government spending under control ran up a hefty bill for a RAAF service, even though an equivalent Qantas flight costs just $221 - or 17 times less.
While most MPs would take a commercial 55-minute flight to get from Australia's biggest city to the national capital, Senator Cormann instead chose a $3,759 private jet service on November 18, 2014, Department of Finance records show.

I think I read somewhere that he did that because he didn’t want to get up early for the commercial flight the next morning.

so Pell has finally been convicted www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/cardinal-george-pell-found-guilty-of-child-sex-abuse-20181214-p50m86.htmlwhat I didn't know before is that he is an IPA member, which sort of explains all the support he's been given by liberal party members such as Abbott.. and of course Rupert Murdoch thank you Julia Gillard who got on with this inquiry despite all the disgusting personal attacks on her by other politicians and certain members of the media.. where are they and what do they have to say about it now? ( yes, looking at you Miranda Devine and Andrew Bolt) some like Mathias Cormann have today deleted old tweets supporting Pell

this is interesting.... I wonder if we'll ever find out where all the money went. I hope it didn't go back to the LNP by way of ""donations""
Behrouz Boochani Verified account @behrouzboochani 6h6 hours ago More The Paladin staff are protesting in Manus right now. This company has made $423m while paying local staff only $450 per month.People are very angry at this company and want to be respected. The big companies made the refugees and locals victims while they have made so much money.

Yes, there is no security, cleaners, medical staff, drivers, kitchen staff etc. No Paladin staff at all. The absence of security has concerned quite a few of the men.
Billions of dollars have been allocated to Manus over the past 5+ years. Very little has gone to the men or the locals. One day, the truth will come out and I would say that there will be few surprises.

these words by Pells defence lawyer... ""He argued that Pell’s crimes — which include sexual penetration of a child under 16 — were “plain” and “vanilla”. He suggested the Vatican’s third most senior catholic should get a slap on the wrist because his sex crimes against two boys lasted “less than six minutes”, there was “no ejaculation” and “no use of any implement”.Dressed in a black robe with matching black glasses, he called Pell’s 13-year-old victims “naughty boys” for drinking church wine before they were attacked. are what seals it for me... that's an admission that he did commit the crime as found by the jury of 12 people who heard all the evidence watching 2 former PM's , Andrew Bolt, Miranda Devine and a few others, still defending Pell leaves me feeling a little bit sick www.news.com.au/national/victoria/courts-law/george-pells-lawyer-robert-richter-qc-tells-court-sex-crimes-against-children-were-vanilla/news-story/20e0459998f5eb9c458c498002c8225f

It's hard to find the full transcipt of Richter's defense argument in any articles now
but this part "
because his sex crimes against two boys lasted “less than six minutes”,
is very telling imo
