I don’t always agree with Walid Aly, but this piece absolutely nails it. www.canberratimes.com.au/politics/federal/dutton-s-au-pair-drama-shows-hypocrisy-of-immigration-policy-20180830-p500np.htmlIn conclusion: I don’t know the story of this woman. Maybe she really does have unique humanitarian circumstances that would melt my heart. After all, I have nothing against her. But is this what our humanitarian cases look like? Is the bar really set so that the Iranian asylum seeker nearing death who has broken no laws cannot even be allowed into the country to access medical treatment, but a French woman simply must be allowed to be an au pair if we are to be a “humane and generous society”?
Is there some principle being applied consistently that accounts for both cases? Or can we now admit that this posturing of law and order, of national sovereignty, of the solemn duty to banish “unlawful arrivals” is just so much bullshit, conveniently dropped for the right kind of people?
I’m not saying this is the scandal of the decade. I suspect this will all soon pass without much cost to Dutton and that’s probably fair enough. But if it passes without a clear verdict of hypocrisy, not just on Dutton but on the way we frame our public discussion of immigration, it will only be because we’ve long since abandoned any approach to the subject that has anything to do with principles.

If Dutton is forced to resign it will mean another bielection - not good for a government already so on the nose with the general public.

Malcolm Turnbull's son is encouraging people to donate to Labor ahead of the Wentworth by-election for the ex-prime minister's former seat.
Alex Turnbull has re-tweeted Labor candidate Tim Murray's call for donations for the upcoming poll for the federal Sydney electorate
"Best bang for the buck you'll get in political donations in your life," the former Liberal leader's son said in his re-tweet of Mr Murray's post on Saturday.
"Tight race, tight margin for the government, big incremental effect whatever happens.
"If you want a federal election now this is the means by which to achieve it."

www.radionz.co.nz/news/pacific/365662/nz-reporter-released-after-being-detained-in-nauruRNZ's reporter on Nauru said it was understood Ms Dreaver was taken to the police station on the island after trying to interview a refugee outside of the camp. She said they asked for her visa, told her she was breaching her conditions and stripped her of her accrediation for the Pacific Islands Forum being held on the island. World Vision New Zealand said it helped Ms Dreaver connect with refugees on Nauru and it was contacted by its liaison person this afternoon. They said Ms Dreaver's interview had been stopped by the Nauru police, and she was taken by them. The Nauru Government has limited the movements of journalists covering the summit and placed restrictions on who they can talk to. An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade was with Ms Dreaver during the incident. New Zealand's opposition National party said New Zealand must get assurances from Nauru no other journalists would be detained on the island for doing their job. "Freedom of the press is a fundamental part of any democracy and journalists must be free to tell important stories," said Foreign Affairs spokesman Todd McClay. New Zealand's ACT party said the government should send a stern warning that millions in foreign aid will be cut if Nauru does not respect basic human rights.

How come it costs so much to put a child into child care.. But the child care workers only get paid $22ph.. Where does all the money go? I guess insurance would be high.. But $22 an hour is not enough.

A quick update on the Manus refugee who lost the sight of one eye during the attack that killed Reza Berati and was losing sight in the other eye. Thanks to a Court Order, he arrived in Australia a few days ago for treatment. The doctors will be doing all that they can but due to the length of time that it has taken, they are doubtful that they can save what little sight he has left.
Another Court Order was given for woman with severe mental health issues to be transferred here. This is meant to happen tomorrow but for the first time, the Nauran government is blocking it. I don't know why and I hope that it isn't what I suspect.
