Came home today and was surprised that Jacinda Ardern has resigned.
I'm really sad about that. Maybe in the future when her family is grown she might come back.

It's big news here.....was wondering what your reaction to this would be.

It seemed to just come out of nowhere, very unexpected.
She has to do what she feels is right for her, but I hope at some point she comes back as well.

I understand there has been growing disquiet with her for a while now. I heard talk of her going when I was last over there.
I’ll go out on a limb and say maybe it takes a woman to recognise when you’ve done what you can and it’s time to step back. You don’t see many men doing that. Ego and all that ……

She did have to govern through some very tough happenings - covid, the aftermath of the Christchurch massacre (51 died),a volcanic eruption on White Island (22 died).
I can see why she'd want to be involved with her daughter starting school soon.
She's still fairly young (42) and has a lot of years left for new positions in the future.

It's quite typical to see all the far right misogynistic "journalists" coming out to knock her down. The usual Murdoch LNP leaning grubs.

It works now, Kay. What the hell is wrong with the world these days. Is it just because of social media or were people always so nasty and vicious, and cowards too I might add.

Sometimes you just have to walk away from the vitriol, for your own mental health. I don't blame her at all for resigning.

When I saw this, I was saddened. As I recall she was quite good at her job but the tremblin' ol boys were quite vile. Can't blame her, I suppose but viable... ALL... democratic countries & societies need ( desperately) all the good help they can get! Watching clowns the likes of Trump, that MiniCooper stuffed with Johnson/Truss/Sunak/et al, the hitlerian despot running Turkeye (not a misspelling - one of his initiatives ) and SOOOOOO may others... Well...just makes my eyes squeeze tight & me brain hurt a bit. ( and go find - anyone have a spare invective? I can't think of anything vile enough for this drooly scab - Jeremy Clarksons' mighty, misogynistic missive on Megan Markel. Oh yeah, there's a new Marcos running the Philippines! ( not really, tho. Mama Imelda , a dewey-eyed 94 years young, is keeping a watchful eye on Baby Boy Bong Bong...) My head hurts...

I am so sad about the news out of Türkiye - and I have no problem with learning that country’s real name. The anglicising of indigenous names has long been yet another issue with colonisation I love hearing and learning correct Māori language and pronunciation from my birth country and also adopting Australian First Nations names for local landmarks

"...and I have no problem with learning that country’s real name. " Nor do I. My point is more about the so-called leader of the country. Nor was it my intent to denigrate ANY culture, peoples or their origins. It's about so-called Leaders, their words & deeds. You know, like Erdogan ( who sicked his security thugs on Turkish expats and other protestors, outside of the White House, as he and Ex-Emperor Stinkfinger smiled ) having himself a shitfit ove the US acknowledging the Armenian Genocide? I THOUGHT the thread was about world politics not tragedies. Not that I don't care. As I said, all the feces flying can make one's head hurt. It can also make it hard to keep the numerous devastations besetting seemingly every corner of the world separate, for some.

Unfortunately, politics always seems to worm it's nasty little way into all these tragedies.

Not that I can do anything about what someone else might think about something I said ( or that they might think I said), I just wanted to make it clear that I wasn't dumping on indigenous folk, particularly in a time of tragedy. For all my faults, I don't think callous disregard of that sort has ever been part of my nature. Regardless of whether of not that was the insinuation, I guess I felt the need to point out that I was addressing "POLITICS worldwide". My apologies for anyone's confusion re: me character. P.S. Y'all that know me know that I've been working at the whole "kinder, gentler" thing but, DAMN, the last few years have taken a bit of a toll on yer ever-luvin' Lloyd, so... P.S.S. How 'bout that Liz Truss, yeah?!? What a hoot! ( not being misogynistic; I'd laugh at ANY Prime Minister whose tenure was outlasted by a fucking head of lettuce, is all. )
