Hypothetically let’s go with windows....
Would you be likely to hire:
1. A well known company like “Window King“, that advertises with commercials? (So much so that everyone knows the jingle... “window king makes me sing 🎶)
2. A local company that you’ve noticed as you drove by. “We Do Windows and Doors” - they don’t have ads or even a website.
3. Your neighbor’s cousin’s ex wife’s sister’s stepson. He’s a great handyman. He works at Food Giant but does home repair on the side. You can see his work at 1234 Main St. He put in new windows last weekend.

I feel like #1 would do a great job but be expensive from paying for all those commercials.
#2 makes me nervous. No reviews.
#3 would probably be the least expensive but who is this person??

When my well broke, I went to the Plumbing Supply store and asked them who their most frequent customer was. They gave me his name and number. He was fast, efficient and inexpensive. He drove a really crappy Van with no logo and bald tires. He showed me what to do if it ever happened again, along with a teach a man to fish speech.
Turns out he has a contract with a major fast food chain and does residential plumbing via word of mouth. Didn’t have a business card 🤷♀️.

i'd research the local company and if they checked out go with them - if they didn't have good reviews i'd go #1

When I needed my pool fence fixed and needed other jobs done around the place I tried 3. He replaced some timber under the veranda that had moisture damage, like mushrooms growing out of it. He also drilled some bolts into a wall for a very heavy painting and wall mirrors and replaced a garage door frame that the termites had eaten out in the old garage.
Word of mouth and dirt cheap. Not all on the same day.

2 and 3. Stay local if you can.

Yes, I have had really good luck with going with the locals recommended by word of mouth.
My next goal is to have someone take out the old ceiling fans in my house.... all they do is gather pollen and dust. Just had my A/C replaced inside and out and when the weather permits, I open my windows and doors to let the house air out through the screens.

I’d go by word of mouth and personal recommendations by people I know. Word gets out very quickly, especially in small towns, if someone does a shonky job.

I'd go with the company with the funds to advertise. If they fuck up the project- I know they're scared of my Saul. They have the funds to make me whole in the event they may fuck up.
No flippin' way will I have the local "handyman" enter my home.
