I’ve decided I need (want) a new laptop. The one I’ve got is getting a bit old and slow. Trouble is I don’t really know what specs I need or what I should be looking for.
I use it mainly for doing my golf captains work, so Word and Excel, also Gmail and a bit of web searching. (I do most of my surfing on my iPad). I don’t store heaps of photos etc on it - they are in the cloud or on my phone.
I bought Publisher about 12 months ago so would like to be able to reinstall that on the new one - is that possible?
Help! Any advice would be much appreciated.

My laptop is 4 1/2 years old now, HP brand. Still going well. I bought a generic power adaptor cord for it recently, as the cord had split/exposed wires.
Is Publisher Microsoft ? As they usually let you transfer to a new computer (delete it off old computer).
I did look at new laptops recently and there seemed to be more of the smaller chrome book? type devices (with USB ports). Laptops more whizz bang features, expensive and used for work and gamers etc.

I had to get a new laptop earlier this year. I used to love getting new computers, upgrading the graphics and ram myself, but this one I do not love at all. If I was to do it again I would build my own and install select software. This dang thing spies on you, is full of bloatware and crap and you can’t buy and install programs now, you have to subscribe and get it from the cloud, paying monthly fees for what used to be a one off price. I hate it. Having said that, it seems to run fine although sometimes it’s slower with processing 100’s of images , I suspect 5hat is because it is doing sneaky stuff in the background. I won’t let it connect to the internet by itself. Sometimes I can’t use some programs, can’t remember if it’s Office or Adobe stuff, but it needs to verify I am licensed to use it,and to do that it needs to be connected to the internet. It’s a hp running windows 10. Bit of a jump from the toshiba with xp I was running. Is alfoil on sale this week?

And after that unhelpful rant, I think any of the new notebook type things would be ok, just make sure it has plenty of ram.

🤣🤣 you might as well have been speaking Martian 🤣
I like the idea of a notebook (don’t know why). What number constitutes “plenty of ram”?

8GB RAM should be enough for what you're going to use it for. Next step up is 16GB.
Processor another thing to choose. e.g. CPU: 10th generation Intel Core i5 – i7

Would my ridiculously complicated* spreadsheets migrate from IOS to Mac? *which are in reality probably fairly simple

Yeah, I don’t think it would be a problem. You just install Office for mac, or download , or login to your microsoft account or office365 or however it works these days.

chromebooks are best avoided imo , this one is terrible , keys in the wrong place , no 'at' symbol at all (google ''at symbol''and copy is the workaround )

No @ symbol? That’s surprising as chrome book was designed with a focus on web surfing.

I have a Lenova... it sucks.
I agree more ram than you need is how to go. Most HDs are so big these days you can't fill them
biggest issue with this computer is boot time... and compatibility.
I run navigation software... and have two serial port adapters... one for AIS, one for GPS
they randomly fail, and many times on boot up, I need to close and re-try several times to get both recognized..
I cannot afford GPS failures at night.
