And then I see an article that hippos cannot swim so I’m completely confused.
Hippos swim? Right?
Porcupines cannot swim but I’ve never seen one try.

My husband told me that Hippos don't swim, but just float through the water, because they can stay under so long without breathing. But when they come to the top, they aren't swimming, but pushing themselves up from the bottom. Anyway, that's what the hippo zookeeper told him.

Being able to float over the ability to swim is by far the best way to survive.

I think they move through the water using a stroke we used to call 'dog paddle'. Basically it's just floating and moving your legs(and arms for humans) as if you were walking.
