What does it mean in your country if one self identifies as a conservative?

Right wing - generally supports the Liberal Party or National Party (Libs or Nats or when they are in coalition the LNP) Far right would include Pauline Hanson One Nation Party (PHON), Farmers, Fishers & Shooters Party (or whatever they call themselves these days)
as opposed to Left wing - generally supports the Labor Party. Further left are the Greens
I’ll try to find you a more comprehensive list, bbl

Thanks Kay....
So, conservative=right lean= less gov't control over private sector, including environment protection=less social programs for public?
The party names are different but the conservative agendas are pretty much the same as here?.....

Are the extreme right/left people keeping reasonable people from getting anywhere like here?
I guess I mean there is so much division that we are about to blow up. Everyone seems to have to pick a side or else.
My sister identifies as Republican, yet voted for Obama twice. I think that people who have a party identity but are moderate are more in numbers but get yelled down by the extremes.

Anyone else want to jump in here? …… I don’t think things are as extreme here, although I think we are unfortunately heading in that direction. We don’t have voter registration here (I don’t really understand your system) so I don’t think people are quite so hard and fast one “side” or the other. Having said that though there are plenty who will tell you they will vote LNP or Labor or die! Case in point my friend and neighbour who, when you drill down really doesn’t agree with many Liberal policies but will still tell you she will vote LNP because she always has, she likes Tony Abbott (even though she doesn’t live in that electorate these days, and he’s not the member there anymore) and that’s that! (I still love her though 😆) Once you get outside the relatively few people who take a keen interest in politics most will tell you they don’t care because they (pollies) are all useless anyway 😂. I’m probably more interested because I used to live and work in Canberra, where I think by proximity, most people are more invested and interested. I also usually work for the Aust Electoral Commission, who administer polling, at elections. I find that fascinating. (I’m not during this by-election though because of covid) I’m sure other posters have other views deb joono madara ?

That didn’t really answer your question 😂
I think there is still room here for moderates, although I think that is decreasing.
There is also room for the great Australian apathy 😂

Kay, that's ok....I'm really not sure what my question was... Guess, we will know soon how many pay attention to what is going on....I think that apathy on the part of Americans got us here.

Nothing wrong with that pepe. It beats voting whichever way just because that’s what your dad always did, and there’s plenty of those types around 🙄

The main thing is that you vote!
Voting for the least harmful requires paying enough attention to be able to make a determination. And an important one.
It seems to me that the conservative/right has really taken advantage of voter apathy(non-voters) here. That and voter surpression.
Throw in this crazy Nationalistic movement and it is really ugly.
Are the conservatives in your country just as underhanded?

I have a question for all our American members. In your opinion is there a real danger of 'blood in the streets' if Trump loses in November?

Yes, as surreal as it is to say, I fear that.
I just can't figure out how anyone will know who is who.....other than by race.

I remember reading that before....blew my mind. How great is that.
If there is a movement away from that I would take it as a sign of a power grab by a political faction.
Here the Right/ Republican party does everything that can to keep people from voting. It is just crazy.

Bean, why is there a delay between your elections and the inauguration? Over here once the result has been declared that’s it, you’re off and running. I’m interested in the November to January period. Are there restrictions on what can and can’t be done in that period? What do both the incoming and outgoing presidents do?

That's a good question!
I thought that it was to facilitate a smooth and peaceful transition of power. You know, tell the new guy what's going on. Kind of like job training. And to give the new president time to select his advisors, staff etc.
In reality, I don't know where that came from or if there was a consideration that a psychopath was in office.
In the case of Trump he can behave like an idiot and cause as much damage as he can on his way out the door.
Example...angry person who trashes property that he/she has been foreclosed on.
It is my bedtime, but tomorrow I am going to search for how the lag time came about.

Thanks, that would be interesting. Our candidates are expected to have that all more in less in place going into the election. And of course the public service and govt departments (supposedly) aren’t political so they don’t change.

we have compulsory voting here, but i did not vote in the recent local election, because morrison told me to stay home....haven't been fined yet
i vote 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, not 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.......in other words i put the worst candidate last and work back, so i actually do not vote FOR anyone
we have preferential voting here, maybe someone else can explain that to Bean

i bet the GOP wish they could go back to early 2016 and do again, it was the first time that the party in general did not want the candidate who was leading, and they were too confused or timid to do anything about it (they could have)

Thanks dawn. That’s interesting. Our govt goes into what is called Caretaker Mode as soon as an election is called (our terms are not fixed; they only have a maximum term, no minimum). During that time they are only supposed to do things that keep the country “ticking over” ie no major decisions or undertakings. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caretaker_government_of_Australia

Thanks, dawn, for posting that link. Here's another for gluttons for punishment...... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_transitionAfter reading those links I am more worried....seems a lot of the peaceful transition of power really involves a good bit of good will on the part of outgoing toward the new administration and new president. I seem to have always taken that for granted. kay, I need to reread your Caretaker link!

I wish everyone who votes in this country could spend some time in the polling place before and after the doors have closed. The security and scrutiny is so tight it should be reassuring to anyone. I know things have gone wrong occasionally, but really when you look at the volume of votes it’s a pretty damn good system. Some elections we have been there until close to midnight auditing the number of ballot papers issued against the number returned. If it’s any more than a couple out we have to stay until it’s sorted out. One time one of our counters had bundled papers together into 50s instead of 20s, so of course they didn’t tally. Another memorable time somehow a handful of ballots had managed to get themselves into a sealed, but withheld, ballot box that was stored behind the desks. We never did find out how that happened, but we had to find them before we could leave.
It’s a long and exhausting day but fun and really fascinating seeing the process.

I know the volunteers do a fantastic job Kay, but I've lost a bit of faith in the AEC over the election signage. Today they forced labor to remove a purple and white sign in Bega , the sign simply said "number every box" ..yet when gladys liu used signs the same colour, that said in Cantonese, tick Liberal 1...they gave us every excuse under the sun for not removing the signs

i hate to say it, but i agree with bean that we DO need to be fearful of people being harmed because the political divide and the RABID loyalty to trump by far too many people. and the worst part for me is that my bestie has been warning me about this for years and i blew him off and even laughed at what i thought was just his paranoia. you all know we love our little apartment just because it's very convenient and a nice little home for us, but at this point we love it even more because it's hidden from most people. our cul de sac is close to invisible from the major street we're off of, so the only people we see around here either live here or are delivery people. it's SAFE, and our old hood wouldn't have been, i think....
