when i sold dog jumpers at a market, one of the other stall holders asked me to knit a jumper for her mouse.......i don't know how effective it was......you could do that, Dawn, when the cold weather hits P.S. does she have a name yet?

Dawn has a nice soul. Killed the mommy mouse- as infestation is less than ideal- but also saves her child. Sounds like something Jesus would do- cheers!

I've been doing a bit of reading up on mice as pets. It seems you acquired your little one at just the right age - fully furred, but eyes not quite open. As you are the first living creature she saw when they did open, she has bonded with you and thinks you are her mum.
And I wouldn't worry too much about long term. Mice are very short lived - only 2 to 3 years apparently.

Our youngest son had a pet mouse or two while he was growing up. All called Phoenix. One of them was a bit of an escape artist. The darn thing was always getting out. It usually turned up rather quickly.....(we had 6 cats............yet never lost a Phoenix to one) This one time Phoenix escaped was at a time when we had a broken washing machine. We did it tough when the four children were at home. So I was hand washing all our clothes for a few weeks until we could buy a new washing machine. Now you can imagine how much washing there would be in a house hold of 6........two of those 6 being teenage girls. The washing machine still washed............it just didnt spin out the water. I just didn't have time to do a huge search for the mouse. It was our second daughters job to get the washing in and help fold it. A few days after the mouse had gone missing our daughter brought in the clothes off the line. We were sitting on the couch folding them up. Our youngest son was watching TV in there with us. Our daughter turned a air of shorts int he right way and shook them. And out fell Phoenix................rather wet still............and very dead. Our son looked at us ..........and said...............is that my mouse..............YOU KILLED PHOENIX !!!! Now this happened nearly 20 years ago. Our kids still get great pleasure out of telling the story of how I drowned the mouse. Like all stories over the years.........this one has grown legs. Now it usually involves the mouse holding it's breath and swimming back up to the top of the washing machine...................only to met by me..............pushing it back down again...........and so on. Dawn..............don't let you mouse in the laundry.........

@ Flashie and poor Phoenix. Is now a good time to confess that we have a pet spider - or at least Mr Penny does. It has built a very substantial web across the driver's side wing mirror of our car and doesn't seem to mind the occasional outings. Mr Penny refuses point blank to disturb it.

A pet spider is something I can do without. A big huntsman made me jump today. It's sitting on my window, luckily on the outside.

I have lots of spiders- only the cute ones get to stay and only if they live in the corner.
Ya gotta keep the mouse house clean or it gets really dirty really fast. Especially because she is pooping on her own now. She'll do it anywhere when the urge strikes. So here I am cleaning her home. It takes seconds to do this, but that's all the time she needed to jump out of my hand and fall 4-5 feet to the floor. What a way to go after all the work I've put into her.
But nope. She squeaked some serious squeaks and came crawling to my bare feet. (She had rolled a good foot or two away). I'm thinking she has broken every bone in her wee body.... but how can I know? She ate fine, she slept, she ran around, slept, made normal poop.... I guess she is continuing her survivor role.
Maybe her name should be SurFeivel (for Pepe).
From now on I shall only hold her when I'm closer to the ground.

Apparently I have a highfalutin hoity-toity better than bourgeoisie mouse.
She didn't eat when I was at work. She did seem happy to see me. I could make a list of what she doesn't like to eat. It's ridiculous because house mice are scavengers. Ugh. She was eating Buck's puppy food and now doesn't want that, either.
I gave her cooked chicken and she ate a little.
I don't want to keep her for her life, it would be a small prison. It's -10c outside, letting her go isn't an option. I turned off the heating pad but moved her into the warmest part of the house. She is days away from being an adult. (Appx 5 human years have passed since I've had her- she's almost legal to drive and vote!)

Because you've had her since she was a baby and she's bonded with you, I doubt very much whether she'll pine for the great outdoors. Get her some toys to keep her occupied while you're at work (here are some suggestions) www.thesprucepets.com/top-toys-for-mice-1238494 and take her out of her mouse house and play with her when you get home and I'm sure she'll be perfectly happy.

She is not happy, I can see it in her tiny beady eyes and her lack of wanting to do anything other than eat and sleep (depression).
I realize she can't miss what she never had - freedom. But I think freedom is something we all have a need for inside of us. It's built in. It's something innate. She won't ever be happy living in a confined space. No animal could.

I checked out toys and mice igloos at the store. (And thank you for the links Penny, I checked all that out as well). I bought her a $1 mouse ball that she has no interest in.
I made her a mini play set out of cardboard and tried to make her environment stimulating.
When I woke up, she was on top of her homemade igloo and seemed really excited that I was there. Her food dish was empty so I immediately took it to wash it and give her fresh food. When I came back to place the food, she was waiting at the exact spot I place the food.
I think she is planning an Escape From Dawncatraz. If she does, I will pull up the traps and think of a plan B.
I've mulled ideas on where she could be released and still stay warm, but all my ideas suuuuuuuuck.

did the dog eat it? it got hoovered up by mistake? it escaped, made a nest in your undies drawer, chewed through all your knickers and now you're too embarrassed to hang your washing out in case the neighbours see your crotchless panties you kept it in your shirt pocket and forgot to take it out before doing the laundry
