Hello everyone... Its been a while since I was here, I have stuck my head in and had a read. We’ve also been off travelling, again. This time to Vietnam and KL, can’t say I liked either place and wouldn’t be keen to return. I’m glad I went, my husband is ex army and this was on his bucket list. On the day our travelling party went to the museum and the chu che tunnels I decided I couldn’t face it and stayed at the hotel. Like a lot of places in Asia it’s filthy! Garbage is just tossed at your rear end and people sniff and spit EVERYWHERE! 🤮 so like I said glad I went but won’t be returning.

Really? I liked Vietnam - not the cities so much, although I loved places like the University of Literature in HaNoi. We deliberately didn’t go to any of the war places. I suppose it would be different if we had experienced it though. Absolutely loved HoiAn. I’d go back there tomorrow. And I would have liked more time in Hui, our trip got a bit mucked up there and we lost a day.
Welcome back anyway 😄

Hi Muggsy, KL must have changed over the years (40) as it was very clean and I didn't notice the other nasties while I was there, or in when we were in Singapore, but Hong Kong was a whole other matter and sounds like your experience.
Glad you are home safe and well.

Hi Muggsy
I wouldn't mind going to Vietnam, the more rural areas maybe.
My youngest spent 6 weeks in KL on a Uni grant (did an internship/work experience there in the Aust High Commision).. as all her expenses were covered she didn't mind it there but thought it was pretty crazy. The hotels could only sell alcohol to tourists? Cost was very exxy.

Hi Muggsy. Welcome back.
My only forays into Asia have been Singapore and Bali, so I'm not able to comment on the places you mentioned.

Hi muggsy, Welcome back from your holiday... it's a funny thing Prim, but I found both Singapore and Hong Kong to be pretty clean..I must admit though, last time I was in Honkers was when it was under British rule.. I went there a few times on shopping expeditions

Prim I felt very sorry for KL, apparently their tourist trade has dropped to almost non existent in the last 10 years, KL used to be the major transit stopover before Dubi and the emerits opened up. The people there are really struggling now. Kay we did a huge amount in the 16 days we were there, Hoi an was my favourite spot too, we did a cruise on a very small boat and a foodie walk. In hindsight it was also a bad time to visit, holidays in China. The place was packed! 😂😂😂

Maybe officials in KL should not have threatened to shoot tourists in their malls and more would come visit. When I was there we visited a huge, new mall. It was very different to anything I had seen in Australia at the time as we had only just started building the first few Westfields.
While I was inside I took out my camera and went to take a photo of the entrance to one of the bigger shop's display. A soldier standing near the entrance said something to me and waved his hand. I didn't understand and just thought he didn't want his photo taken so I moved away a little and continued to attempt to take the photo. He then proceeded to remove his rifle from his shoulder and take aim at me. My mother had conniptions and we high tailed it out of there as fast as we could. Apparently it was prohibited to take photos in there.
That did it for us. We stayed in the hotel until it was time to leave for our next stopover.

During the war, when the soldiers first went to Vietnam for their tour of duty, they said the smell was horrible....like death and garbage....just so thick in the air it filled their nostrils.

We went to a cooking school up the river in HoiAn. I learned how to make rice paper wrappers from scratch. Came back all hung ho and got the gear to make them. I’ve never done it since 😆 Some things should just stay on as holiday memories 😂
It’s funny, I usually have quite a weak stomach but the smells in Asia and India don’t bother me. The worst place for stink that I’ve been to was Siem Reap in Cambodia. That was putrid.
