this is a 'let's talk about Hot Cross buns instead of the weather"" thread ( for kate)
I know they're in the shops early.. straight after Christmas... but that's OK by me as we live in a commercial world
I love Hot Cross buns but I haven't bought any yet as we're still munching through Christmas cake and other things
has anyone??

Have not seen a hot cross bun for sale yet and would not boy or eat one until Easter, as that is when we eat HCBs.
If I was a bun in my kitchen this morning, I would be feeling rather cross too. as my house feels so hot with this weather at the moment. You would think the baking was taking place in my kitchen. 32 in there at 10am (37 outside) and still getting hotter.

someone on CS had a good recipe for them, but I just never got around to making them

my hubby and daughter do too Pepe... they're going really cheap in stores atm.... 50 cents... hubby bought heaps of packets so they'll be eating them for awhile yet

The reason I don't like seeing the hot cross buns and Easter eggs in the shops this early is that when Easter really does come around I'm always thinking, didn't we already do Easter?
Coles has all the Australia day stuff on the shelves, but that's only a few weeks away.

Did you know that originally hot cross buns were supposed to be eaten on Good Friday, not Easter Sunday? Which is actually a bit counter productive commercially, as (in the Catholic Church at least) Good Friday was traditionally a day of fasting and penance.

I thought Good Friday you weren't supposed to eat meat. We still have HCBs on Good Friday, and even though I'm of no religion (brought up as Catholic) I still don't eat meat.
The seafood market makes a killing.

Home made or traditionally made buns (not available in stores that I am aware of) are the best tasting. Store bought? You may as well eat raisin bread :)

I don't even want to think about Easter so soon after xmas but hot cross buns are always delicious. Repro made some one year and they were the best that I have tasted.

Hmmmm I don't see anyone dancing.. all I see are people talking about hot cross buns ( and mince pies)
Pepe and Prim. IGA supermarkets have apple and ginger mince pies., they're a little different to the norm.. only 50cents per packet atm

Hot cross buns appearing in supermarkets a couple of days after Christmas has been happening for at least 10 years.
Not surprising that icy gets shocked by that every year.
Christmas, Australia Day, Valentines Day, Easter, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Halloween.....there's enough special occasions for retailers to have special promotional items out for most of the year.

We always ate hot cross buns on Friday and Easter Eggs on Sunday.
Coles Hot Cross buns are pretty good, imo.
Bakers Delights good if they're near fresh out of the oven.

OK, don't shoot me....it is still very hot here and too hot to eat HCBs. We have dry lightening and there is supposed to be rain but nothing so far.
Deb, I want my HCBs to be a treat, so we only eat them from Good Friday and over Easter. Same with Easter eggs. We never allowed the children to have one until Easter. The build up was as exciting as getting them LOL

Prim, the easter bunny used to visit us on Easter Friday. My mum said that was so we were kept occupied. lol.
I come from a family of non-conformists. I was even christened at home, as was my brother. The family motto seems to have been "If it doesn't suit then make it suit".
Now I feel like hot cross buns...

I know it used to be every Friday. Catholic students in my junior school had to have Friday lunch separate to the rest of the students. No doubt we got fish fingers. I have never heard of fasting on Good Friday and my grandmother was a staunch Irish Catholic. I don't remember much about Lent but I did like Shrove Tuesday. Pancake day with lemon and sugar |
