Have you looked in your cupboards and pantry lately? My son gets monstered by mozzies and I found this in the kitchenette. The use by is not 3rd of October, it's March 2010. I haven't used it since they were in primary school. Who's got the oldest can in the cupboard?

I get rid of food things asap.
But there was a giant bag of keys that I had. I had them for years upon years. I had a hard time letting them go. The hoarder gene runs deep in my family. I kept adding unknown keys to the bag until it weighed over a pound. (.45 kg). One day I decided enough is enough and it's been an incredible journey with said keys. I dated the bag. I threw it away one year later after never opening it to look for a key.
Ok yeah, I have a newspaper or 10 from the 1960s, and maybe a few useless things that could be tossed.
But I never mess around with food.

D'oh. Mozzies in the kitchenette has nothing to do with food.
It took me a minute for the translation to occur in my brain lol.
I confess I have out of date products in my "pharmacy". I recently threw out eye wash that expired 6 years ago and I purchased a new bottle.

When I went back to England the other year my elderly aunt showed me her tinned chicken from WW2! It had belonged to her mother in law, it’s a full chicken bones and all. 🤣 I shook the tin and it sounded slushy🤭🤢🤮

My MIL couldn't resist the weekly grocery 'specials' She had a 'glory box' full of them under the sideboard in the dining room. We went through it one time when we were holidaying with them and found it crammed with cans and boxes and packets of food - many well past their use-by date. Luckily my FILhad a cast iron stomach. We threw out all the dodgy stuff, but I imagine she went straight back to collecting again.

At Curves we used to have an annual food collection for struggling families and the idea was to bring tinned foods or staple foods like rice and pasta. The idea was to donate from your own pantry. Even tinned foods can expire and I know I had to throw out plenty.

It's mainly herbs & spices that are passed there use by dates here... The ones sold in glass jars with tiny date stamp, stamped on them in black.. hard to read I buy most herbs & spices now loose from a shop here that specialises in them (the retailer originates in Melbourne and grind their own herbs & spices) can buy any amount from 20gms up. Which is good if you only need a little bit. They also sell them in jars.. which you can take back and refill. Spices & herbs don't go off as such, just loose any flavour they had..still..there's not much point using them then. Just looked have.. ... a near full jar of Thyme leaves - expired June 2018 Moroccan seasoning, nearly empty - Exp Feb 2018 Tin of tuna - best before date Aug 2018 - It's from Aldi, I didn't buy it, I'm the only that eats tuna here..so it's going to go missing now... There's also 3 or so tins of borlotti beans.. can't see any use by dates on them but they've been there for ages.

that looks pretty good to me Kay every year I do a pantry clean-out and I always find something that's expired. Don't know how many boxes of baking soda I've got in there atm ( I use it to clean silver)

he he Kay, that will be a full time job.. checking the use by dates.
Have you been to the Gewurzhaus shop (herbs and spices) in the Canberra Centre? You'd love it in there.. Cost is more than supermarket but the jars hold 55-60gms - supermarket ones around 30gms depending on which herb it is (Thyme only 10gms of herb in the jar I have here)... The jars are refillable and you get 10% off if you take them back for a refill.
Or you can by it by weight (20 grams plus) and get it in small stiff paper bag.

I don't think died herbs and spices will do you much harm if they are past their use by date - they just won't be as strong.

If they've lost their zing not much use, using them though, imo.
Last year there were a few brands (Hoyts & Aldi were two) that got caught out mixing the leaves... Oregano was one from memory... not all the leaves in the bottle were Oregano they had mixed some cheaper ones in)....
