I won't be posting any of the horrific footage of how these poor animals are treated and personally I would love to see this inhumane practise banned. I can't see it happening though. there are numerous petitions going round, including one by Derryn Hinch ( which I have signed) ex health minister (Lib) Susan Ley is said to be proposing a bill to stop animal export, but how serious are they?? I have also seen farmers come out in support of banning it
will use this thread to give updates and would also like to hear your thoughts on it

I haven't watched the latest footage of the sheep cooking alive Pepe.. I didn't think I could take it
my family pretty much stopped eating beef after we saw the Indonesian torture chamber for cattle, it just put us right off
we eat a little beef, but not very much...

The Fremantle community knows this trade is broken - we’ve argued that for decades. A rapid transition to an expanded chilled meat industry is possible”

(there is a difference of opinion on CR re this) it's not just the conditions on the boat, it is also the way they are treated at the other end, such abject cruelty

Craig Emerson @drcraigemerson 16h16 hours ago More I’ve had an idea. Supporters of the live sheep export trade seriously claim they don’t have fridges in the Middle East😳 So why don’t we start making fridges again & export them to the Middle East instead of live sheep?😀
The Middle East countries we export to have their own airlines. To suggest they can’t refrigerate (when they currently buy frozen meat from US, Brazil $ Aust) is ludicrous.
that's a good point isn't it??

this is something I find really interesting here are some farmers calling for a ban
Mr Funnell said the industry would quickly adjust to a live export ban, adding that real farmers were not the ones truly benefiting from the practice.
“I had eight phone calls before 9am today from concerned growers saying to shut it down – every single one of them said ‘who cares, I’ll get over it, we'll adjust’ – they don’t want this happening to their animals,” he said.

I'm going to have to do some research when I have more time, because I want to know who are the owners of these farms who are the big live trade exporters.... it doesn't appear to be the small and "real" farmers who are crying poor about it

it does indeed Maggie... but did you read that link where farmers are saying they can adjust to a ban
it's the nationals who desperately support live animal trade... I bet Gina owns a live export farm

I'm all for a ban. People have been campaigning and protesting about it for the last 35 years or so. It's about time.
I worked for an export company years ago and people were campaigning then.

One thing nobody seems to have mentioned is all the extra jobs it would create if the slaughtering and processing was done here.

David Littleproud claims that the live animal trade has 10,000 jobs which he wants to protect
I can't see it.. where would those 10,000 jobs be?? on the farms. in the transport industry??
wouldn't it create more jobs for Australian workers if abattoirs were re-opened and meat was sent chilled ( as NZ does)
apparently we export about the same amount of chilled meat as we do live animals

Only days after holding a series of press conferences in which he promised to investigate the latest, horrific live export scandal where hundreds of sheep lost their lives, Agriculture Minister David Littleproud has jetted off to Vietnam to announce that $146 million in public money will be used to help support the live export industry.
It is now clear that whatever concerned noises the Turnbull Government might make about live exports, they have no intention of phasing out, winding back, or even truly acknowledging the ongoing horror of the live export industry.

It can't go on the way it is (inhumane treatment of aninals).
Indonesia imports from Aust. a large amount of live animals for meat. I remember from CS thread that there are quite a few areas there that don't have electricity.
A much shorter journey there than Middle East.
I'm wondering who are the owners of the animals once they're placed on the ship. The seller or the buyer?
Does the Aust farmers responsibilty end then or at the other and once they're off loaded.
Not that that matters re animals being mistreated which is the issue here.I just wondered if so many die on the way..who's loss that is and why they let that continue.
