I went to grab something out of the wardrobe this morning and saw again how much stuff I have in there that I will never wear again but I cant ditch or donate. Numero uno is a navy crossover cardigan with brass looking buttons that I bought from a uniform shop when I was working in an office. I wore it everyday through winter when I was pregnant with my first son, so it's over thirty years old now. Then there is the beaded little black dress that I bought for a Christmas do, and also wore on my fortieth birthday. I still love it but I'm never going to get into it again. There are a few more things, but they all relate to family occasions or moments or what I was doing at the time. I might need a bigger wardrobe soon

I don't think that it's silly. A few tangible items that hold strong memories seems ok to me. I have a couple of totes with ephemera...old magazines, newspapers, letters etc. Every few years I pull them out .....if I don't remember what the hell something is about then out it goes. Sometimes I am reminded of things that should not be forgotten....some good .....some bad, but survived. I know that for instance that I will never throw out my Life mag. with photos of the Kent State Massacre or my National Geo. with the cover of the Afghan Girl. Not valuable but important to me. I will definitely hold on to my record albums and 45's. I love the look of them , labels , cover art and they still sound groovy. The little beaded black dress is a must keep!

I don't have anything from when I was younger............(long story)
So I decided I would keep a journal...........so I leave a legacy to my family that they can keep.
I put all sorts of stuff in there.
I dry a flower from any hubby buys me.
I keep one card from everyones birthday.
I print out photos from any family occassion,
I keep all invitations.
The kids laugh at me...............but they will be glad one day.
I just couldnt stand the thought that I leave nothing.

That's a great idea Flashie. I also have a couple of journals but they are recipes that I make all the time. Both my boys like to cook so I'm sure they can use them or nag their wives to use them if they ever get married

I still have some dresses from when my girls were small. Getting to the stage of just keeping the few handmade smocked ones (by my sister in law) and give the others away.
Have 3 soft toys(Minnie, Micjey, Goofy) that I bought in Disneyland a long time ago..the stuffing is quite hard so wouldn't be cuddly for a child. They get put in the give away pile then I take them out.
Clothes for myself I don't mind parting with.

Don't get me started on little kids clothes. I didn't keep much but the few things I kept I will never get rid of. Especially the check dressing gown that reminded me so much of the one my granddad wore. It looked so cute on a 2yr old.

I've been keeping a journal since 1985. At least once a week- before I forget- I write a short record of where I was/what I did every day that week.
Pretty cool to look back 30 years- and know exactly where I was on 14 Feb 1992.

My FiL kept a journal from when he was 8 until only shortly before he died. Every day faithfully recorded. A lot of it is “bought a new pair of socks and had sausages for dinner” type of stuff but some of it, especially his time in the Royal Navy, is really interesting.

My father did that too. I used to buy him the diaries for Christmas presents. I guess when he was a farmer he had things to record..weather patterns, details about sheep sold & grain he harvested etc. Later years were more the mundane stuff.
I recently was given his diary for the year I was born.. Crikey..born the 15th of one month and brought home the 7th of next month..those were the days.
His diaries are similar to my Grandads (my Mum had the one of his for the year she was born in) mentions the farm work first then last 'new baby' born.

That was 38 years ago. We've been dealing with my mother-in-law's estate the last year. We are having an estate sale in March and while going through her closet, the dress she wore to our wedding was there. I can't think of any clothes of mine that I have kept over the years. I like to get rid of things that I consider clutter. My husband, on the other hand, is a hoarder.

I'm a bit the same, Egulch. I'm not a clutter person and I often bin things, and then a few weeks later go looking for them forgetting I threw them out or gave them away.
Some things I just can't part with though.
