OH went to Coles this morning and said it was extra busy. I'm going back there soon for some ice cream. Travelling to NZ
Effective from midnight Sunday, all travellers, except for those coming from the Pacific islands, will have to self-isolate for 14 days on their arrival to New Zealand
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced all travellers will have to self-isolate on their arrival to New Zealand, apart from those coming from the Pacific Islands. She said the measures - in effect as of midnight Sunday - include New Zealanders. The restrictions will be reviewed in 16 days and there will be more advice for self-isolation next week. There were already clear guidelines for employers on sick pay and working-from-home advice. It will be the strictest border restriction rules in the world, Arden said. "Alongside Israel and a small number of pacific islands who have effectively closed their borders this decision will mean New Zealand will have the widest ranging and toughest border restrictions of any country in the world," Ardern said. "I make no apologies. This is an unprecedented time. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12316692I can understand that but tourists won't be willing to arrive 2 weeks before their tour/holiday though and sit around in accom they have to pay for, for 2 weeks. You wouldn't be able to go there for a wedding or other short term event either...without spending 14 days there first.

I actually watched/listened to Trump this week.
It kind of reminded me of someone trying to comfort a child. Just using a bunch of words that really have no meaning.
Everything's gonna be fine. One day the virus will be gone and it will be beautiful. Just gone. One day you'll wake up and it's gone.

If we are not suppose to have "gatherings" of more than 500....why area all our schools still open.
Our local high schools here are about 1000 pupils.
Our shopping larger centres have more than a 500 people

I think it's to do with the close proximity of people, Flashie. At the footy and concerts etc people are right on top of each other.
I think schools should be closed down now rather than waiting until the Easter holidays.

A young, slim guy made me laugh at Coles in the frozen foods aisle..he showed me what he had in his basket.. ice cream, chocolate cake and a frozen dessert ..he said if the virus is going to take him out, he’s going to enjoy himself first.
Weird what they’ve run out of..not one brown onion left. . There was a big Coles truck unloading at the back.

I went out tonight and bought enough booze to last for six months. If the world shuts down, I'm going to be as drunk as a skunk. (Sorry Pepe, I'm not singling you out). I also bought some OTC sleeping pills. If the booze runs out, I will sleep through it.
I noticed all the Tylenol and such are gone now. Rice is gone. Kitty litter is gone. Lots of dry dog food but the cans are disappearing.

I haven’t done any proper grocery shopping for ages. The spouse has hit panic mode and wants me to go town first thing in the morning and stock up on beer. someone told him there was only two cartons of the brand he likes left on the shelf. Quelle horreur I’m hoping to buy some bread mix for the bread maker, a jar of peanut butter, and maybe some meat and veg to make in to stews to freeze. I usually only buy toilet paper when it’s on special. I haven’t bought any for quite a while, but have a dozen rolls left so I’m not worried about a daggy bum yet. I tried buying some face masks at Bunnings on Friday, but there is none to be had. There’s a few left online at exorbitant costs. I’ve ordered a box of 10. I hope they arrive, there wasn’t actually any in stock. It probably sounds like I’m over reacting but the truth is, my husband will not survive if he gets this virus, we both know it, and there’s sweet FA we can do about it other than go in to lockdown. I haven’t hoarded anything, and apparently the shops have empty shelves, so the cat better watch herself or she might end up as stir fry

We're the same Clara..................if hubby catches it we could be in big trouble.
Earlier this week our daughter went to the Doctors...........and later that night we read on Facebook that the last confirmed case of the virus here may have presented themselves to the same Doctors.
We didn't know if it was true or not.
So our daughter thought she should do the right thing and ring..............as she works in aged care.
The best she could get out of anyone was..............we can neither confirm nor deny.
Wasnt very helpful.................but I am presuming if she had been in any contact with this person she would have been notified.

I share your concern Clarabelle. Mr Elephant and I are both in the danger zone age-wise, but where I am pretty healthy and would probably shrug it off in the same way I did measles, whooping cough etc as a child, Mr Elephant has pleural plaques and impaired lung function (a legacy of working with asbestos) and would almost certainly not survive. We are OK for toilet paper and I think he has a few face masks kicking around the house which he can wear if necessary, also I am going to stock up on a few pre- prepared meals during my regular shopping over the next couple of weeks. Other than that I'm not too worried.

also Sin.. a lot of the cases we have here are people who travelled to the US, so yes, I believe it's a lot more widespread in your country than anyone knows my sister, her BF and 2 friends here in town were seriously sick last month, we are all positive they had it. the regular flu going around this year isn't respiratory, it's stomach stuff. my sister and i believe that this could have been part of what brought on her heart attack. the doc DID say that the respiratory virus she had before the heart attack contributed to to the inflammation around her heart back then.

I probably wouldn't live through it either. I can't let that happen to me, my loved ones would fall apart, so i'm protecting myself.

Aldi stores are generally a lot smaller than the other supermarkets.. so when they get, for example, toilet paper in, it's not that big a load. I haven't seen any tp in Aldi since the panic buyers started hoarding it.
A Woolies checkout lady said the other day the toilet paper was put out and all gone by 7... (when a customer asked her)... I presumed that to be 7am as there was none in the store that afternoon.
People buying & using tissues and paper towels instead are going to clog up their toilet pipes as those items don't break down in water like tp does.

Daughters tour (Intrepid Travel) to Mexico and Cuba has been suspended.. all tours from 16 Mar to 30 April so far. She will get credit that can be reused in the future. I don't think tourists can go to Cuba unless they go on a tour (Tourism is Cubans main source of income these days).
Her Qantas airline tickets were purchased through a 3rd party.. not sure yet if they will offer any change of dates etc.

I just saw a fb post from a friend on a cruise around NZ. They had just departed Dunedin when they got news about the latest Aust travel bans. Too late to get off the ship and fly home for 14 days self isolation. So it looks like they are going to be bobbing around Cook Strait for 30 days! Very stressful for them, but at least they are retired so don’t have to get back for work. Some passengers would presumably.

And another thought. Presumably the ship would be provisioned for not much more than the, what, 3-4 days it takes to cross Cook Strait. How will they feed them all for a month?

That's happening a bit... turning out to be a nightmare, instead of a relaxing holiday. Could they get food in by helicopter? Cruise passengers kept on board in Hobart due to Tasmanian coronavirus casesRoger Preston-Smith, who works on the Magnifica, decided to disembark and not return. "I don't want to be stuck on that ship, it's too stressful. They're just going to go out to sea and who knows how long it will sit there." An MSC Cruises spokesperson said all passengers were given a consistent message. "All passengers and crew on board were aware they are free to disembark but given today's circumstances, understand that if they leave will be unable to re-join the ship," the spokesperson said." www.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-14/cruise-ship-passengers-arriving-in-hobart/12056370

I think Jacinta should be our PM, not that thing we have now . he really has no idea at all.
I think it is really fantastic that the woolies store are working with meals on wheels to ensure that the elderly get t/p if the need it .

we haven't done any hoarding yet.. because everytime I go to the supermarket to get something... they haven't got it
but I'm thinking about trying to stock up on some things we need today, if I can get them
my daughter works in retail..... ( a fashion store) and they've had the quietest week ever... a niece works at Chadstone and says the same.... over the weekend when I was out, I noticed there was much more traffic than usual... it was people going to supermarkets. The girls are worried that the centres where they work may have to close down as the running costs for the stores are much higher than what they're bringing in
my brother's wife is the bursar at a private school here and she's been home sick for 10 days.. on Wed she had a CV test but is still waiting for the results
