Well this independence day is going to be kind of redundant now the supreme court has pretty much ruled the president is a king.....

Not done yet, Pepe, though it's not hard to imagine. Sadly, here's no magic wand to wave & make the evil high-tail it outta here. Hard to believe I'm watching these horrors but not much to do but gird the ol' loins & prepare for interesting times. Guess we're going to find out what Americans are really made of, yeah? ...shudders...
Sorry! That's probably not much help.
Thanks, again, for the venue, btw. 'Tis reassuring to find that the place that gave me shelter so long ago is still open for business.

Well... "My" Representative ( he's wholly "Lock Her Up" maga ) sent me an email, the other day, offering to help us get expedited passports. I wonder if he's trying to tell us something.
20 year-old with an AR-15. He get the rounds from one of those new bullet-vending machines?
Rhetoric's getting sharpened tonight, I guarantee. I can also pretty much guarantee rational gun laws will be an absolute NON-starter.
And the innocent murder victim will just be considered more "collateral damage" by a certain sect, if he's not useful as grist for a campaign.
I'm afraid it's going to get worse before it gets better. And it feels like about all I can do is watch this unfold. ( although I AM going to get our passports . Better to have & not need then need & not have, yeah? )
If it feels like I'm being flippant about this, try to believe, I'm not. When I started this thread, I said it was going to get freaky. I don't think I actually imagined it would go on so long nor get this weird. I don't think anyone could have imagined the Shit Show that is Trumpland ~ it's almost mind-numbing & it takes me an enormous amount of resources to sort through want I see, hear & feel. I desperately want to stick my head in the sand & hide until it's gone. Sadly, I'm required to sit & watch, mostly idle.
I love this country very much and I've seen enough of the outside world, experienced enough, to know just how blessed I've been for so many decades. Watching all that has occurred, the depths of... Avarice and debauchery and... cruelty for the SAKE of cruelty...
Sorry. It's all just giving me a wee dose o' the sads & I don't have much time to work it through these days. And, really none of us know how this will roll, right?

"Scary times in your part of the world Noid, and one person is causing most of it." Scary times all around I think, J, but particularly here, at the moment, yes. I'm thinking Ukraine is worse, facists are pushing hard in the U.K., France & who knows where else they're lurking.
And that orange guy should take some responsibility but that isn't really his "thing" and he's got lots of minions & allies that are equally guilty of feeding the hate. I'm hoping cooler minds prevail but the screaming meemies have already started ( if they've ever really ceased ).
A current sampling from some folk I trust with the straight scoop...

What I struggle to understand, and maybe some of our American friends can explain, is; you seem to vote for every position, right down to (it seems) the dog catcher, except the VP who is appointed by the Pres. The second most important person in the country and you have no direct say in who that is. How does that work?

" How does that work?" For all my caterwauling about so many veeps, I never ONCE thought to consider this, SOooooo... About the VP From Senate.govI'm not sure it actually answers your question. I've only glossed it over & there's not much left in me tank. I CAN say I don't think Old Joe would have been as successful had he been saddled with a Vance or a Lindsay Graham by electoral trolls or some such. ( If'n I'm less coherent than usual, I apologize. It's not close enough, yet, to the end of a long day but I wanted to way in anyway. Thanks for making me think a bit! Also had NO idea that that's how ye spelt "caterwauling" & who knows WHEN I would become so edified? )

The second most important person in the country and you have no direct say in who that is. How does that work? Originally, the vice president was the person who received the second place vote. This proved to be a problem when the president was from one party and the vice president was from another party. They eventually passed the 12th Amendment whereby the Vice President was chosen by the electoral college and was the person in the winning side, who received the second number of votes. This made it so both president and vp were from the same party. It wasn't until 1940, that the nominee picked his own VP. This was Roosevelt. He still had to have his selection nominated and voted on at the party convention. But it became moot as the individual parties have rubber stamped and nominated the person who the presidential nominee of the party has chosen.

The same sort of thing applies to state's Lieutenant Governors. They have even less of a job than the Vice President does. There is really no need for them. It's not like if a Governor suddenly dies they need someone they can immediately hand the nuclear launch codes to.
