To me, this relatively new theme park attraction at Universal Studios in Orlando Florida holds alot of fascination...I REALLY want to go there some day....
In another thread we were talking about dreams, and someone mentioned theme park dreams....Well, a recurring dream of mine that seems to start off like a nightmare, but some how always seems to end on an exciting note, where I don't want it to end...is this one where I'm like the last person on a ride, and I'm on the ride during which time the theme park closes and everyone forgets that I'm locked in at night....So I'm stuck overnight on this ride...
And it's one of those rides that descends into this long dark tunnel below ground.....and it just gets scarier and scarier......Well....at the same time as being horrified by that imagery and the implications, I'm also fascinated by these things as well....I don't condone dark hellish imagery and the idea of child witches, like in the Harry Potter books, but at the same time, there's a fascination with these concepts....the idea of a magical world, where people have a kind of intimate brotherhood in common, and share common adventures together....I suppose I'm not alone in finding these things appealing....which is why the Harry Potter movies are so popular and they made a theme park out of it....
I wouldn't want to be stuck in that world, but harmlessly visiting it for a day does have an attraction....
My Grandfather died before they completed Epcot in Orlando....and the poor guy just worked odd jobs all his life, like 18 hours a day providing for his family...He never did anything but work....and so, he had this fantasy of one day going to Disney World and Epcot...He had many books on the subject, but sadly....he died before he could realize that dream. I felt so sorry for grampa......
It seems I'm kinda going down the same road....

I've been there, Cy. Went with my 2.daughters (who were in their 20's) who were HP fans since they 10 & 12 ys.
That was in 2012..I think they've extended HP World since then.
It was good..smallish area at that time and packed with people all day from entry time on. Long queues..that was in US winter time too.

That is sad your granddad never got to visit the theme parks. Do you live in the US? I live in N. California, in the city of Sacramento...(state capital).....and I've been to Disneyland near LA in Anaheim....but, I just would like to see Orlando though....
My grandad never took the vacations he provided for his family.....He was always working since the war....My mom recalls vacations down to Carmel when it was cheap to rent a place down there for the weekend, but granddad would never be able to go with them...He was always home working to pay for it all.....And the sad thing I saw in him as a little kid was how he just lit up when you'd bring up the subject of EPCOT...He'd show me his books and all the pictures of how EPCOT was going to look.....He was just in the kind of relationship where Grandma kindof ignored him, and just took him for granted...so the kids...(my mom) having that example, did the same.......
I just felt so completely sorry for him, because he was the nicest most giving guy, never asking for anything for himself....and all he did is work and fantasize about his dream vacation, but it was never realized....Mom, looking back on it, gets filled with so much sadness about it, but I don't blame her, because as a kid, you just follow the example of your parents....When she became an adult she realized how horribly he was treated, but he just accepted it....After his day job as a teacher, he would come home and paint signs which grocery stores always had in their store fronts in the old days....and that's where I always remember seeing him....In the garage painting those signs....He had other odd jobs as well, but never was a part of the family he was providing for.....It was a sad situation, because in his generation, you didn't get a divorce...You just lived with a bad relationship...He was an old WWII army liaison officer....He ran messages between army groups during battle when they were under fire in the trenches...Very hazardous stuff...
And his reward was hard work and no fun the rest of his life...but I saw in him that kid who never got to have what he wanted, and would become alive at the dream of one day going to EPCOT....

I hate theme parks. You couldn't give me a free holiday to Disneyland. I was so not surprised those 4 poor people died at Dreamworld. I'm just surprised it didn't happen sooner. Teenagers being in charge of the rides always made me nervous. Thankfully the boy has grown up and I never have to go to a theme park again.
My fave theme park on the G/C was Currumbin Sanctuary, no rides except a little train to get around the park and lots of great animals.

Aren't they Carmella, I love all parrots, heaps get there at feeding time. I have a picture of my parents there at feeding time when they first came out to Australia. That was ages ago, it's good to see it's still there. It's like a G/C must see. It's great for younger kids.

Currumbin is a great place to visit with kids. I like theme parks.. especially Disneyland.. it's like being in another world. I always wanted to go to Disneyland when I was a child.. took myself there (LA) when I was 22 Have been to Disneyland Paris with eldest daughter (an adult by then) and Disney World Orlando with both daughters (adults). Didn't go to all three Disney World parks though... not enough time.

no idea duffy, we also went to the big shell, the big cow and the house made out of bottles.
oh and at that time if i was an adult i would of said visiting the bundy rum factory was the best lol.
although back then they were pretty stingy i remember them having a small glass filled with rum and people had to dip their finger in for a sample.
my favourite place to stay was Bagara beach.
