To avoid having to talk to each other, they just play word games over there now.

Oh who cares about Duffy?!?! 🏃
I had a black molly that I named Molly. It was a really good fish. Jumped up for food like a tiny dolphin. I loved that fish. I was about 9, Molly was about 2, when my parents acquired this portable medium sized water feature for their foyer. I was told Molly could live in it. I was so happy because it had a waterfall and a good sized area for swimming, much nicer than the small fish bowl.
I wasn't told about the mechanics and that a screen needed to be placed over the filter. My parents didn't think about it either.
I was shocked, horrified and outraged as I watched Molly quickly disappear from the pool and come out the waterfall chopped into tiny bits (imagine a butchers knife yada yada yada).
It was a sad day. (True Story!)

Summer. 1992. I left my dog and goldfish "Face" (my son was young and named it that) with my dad to spend a week in Alaska.
When I got back, the dog was great. I looked at Face's bowl and it was completely dry. I looked at my dad and asked "what happened to the fish"?
He replied, "what fish"?
Poor little dried up Face. The end must have really sucked. Long and drawn out... gasping for water. Ugh. I still feel terrible for that poor fish. Molly's death was really quick.

Ok ok ok so no one thinks the worst - Although this is pretty bad.
I took Gus outside in his cage to play with him on a nice summer morning. I was just a kid, 8 years old. I got distracted.
Later in the afternoon it was so hot that my sisters got the swamp cooler going.
I thought it would be nice to let Gus enjoy the cool breeze. That was the moment his existence occurred to me.
I went outside to retrieve him.
The sun had shifted.
It was a metal cage.
Gus was baked. Not in the fun Dalt baked way.

Poor Gus.
When I was about 5 or 6 my bro and I had a guinea pig and Mum told us to go and put paper and hay in the cage but we didn't do it and the next morning it was dead from the cold. Poor thing. I can't remember it's name though, I was only little.

Hopefully not offensive with my opinion...
Hamsters, rabbits, birds- small animals- terrible idea to give them to most children.
Between my sisters and I - we went through so many small animals (but only 1 dog who lived to an old age).
I blame my parents for buying them and replacing them when they died.

I agree, not a good idea- when my boy was growing up he went through mice, guinea pigs, fish, bird....and it never ended well.
Mum worked a lot and probably kicked herself she didn't check on guinea pig.

The cat got the mice. That was always going to happen.
Guinea pigs got left out and got eaten by the dog next door.
Fish- I don't know what happened to the fish but we had a few different types over the years and they never lasted long.
Bird- bird was already sick, we found him- boy wanted bird to sit on the bath when he was having his bath- bird fell in and died.

We had some goldfish that died from fly spray, my older sister had guinea pigs and they escaped from their cage and were never seen again.. apart from that , living on a farm we had pet lambs and calves and they grew up successfully (and probably ended up as dinner....). Mum took a liking to the odd stray cat and would put food out for it. One cat turned out to be a neighbours from down the road.. they saw it when visiting us and took it home. It came straight back to our house.. they had 3 youngish boys.. puss must have prefered our quieter household. We also had budgies.. I can remember one of my brothers coming to tell me before I got up that the budgie was dead.. I was upset.. it wasn't dead though.. April Fool's joke.

I got my son a parakeet because he kept begging...
I got the bird a huge cage so he could be happy, and he lived where he would have human contact.
I took my son to Disney world in Florida for a week vacation.
My husband stayed home and took care of the dogs and bird.
We talked every day, the dogs were fine. Bird was fine. On the day before we were to come back, my husband asked me where the bird food was. (6 days after the birds last feeding!)
The bird died that day. I was really upset that he fed the dogs everyday but didn't think to feed the bird.
He put the bird in the freezer. I didn't tell my son immediately. We arrived back home. Then days passed. Weeks passed. Months passed and he noticed the bird was not in the cage. Like literally, almost a year later.
We took the bird out of the freezer and had a funeral. I said No when he wanted another bird.

This is a terrible terrible terrible story...
I was living in sin with a science teacher and he was in charge of taking care of the class pets one weekend.
He was a jerk and I could go on about that
But
He left all the animals inside his car so he could do whatever he selfishly wanted to do. For hours in a closed up car on a hot summer day. The little ones never made it to our house.
He was afraid he would be in trouble so we spent the weekend looking for identical replacements. (Snake, rat, tarantula, guinea pig)
We couldn't pull off the guinea pig- he ended up confessing- but the school had too many guinea pigs and rats anyway.
So I ended up being responsible for Punky the guinea pig and Eddie the rat. Eddie had a good, long life.
Punky not so much. 😩

As kids, we always had dogs and cats. Many, many animals "followed" my brother home - numerous dogs, a lizard, a tortoise, a chicken and a rabbit.
My kids had guinea pigs and budgies. The guinea pigs died after eating toxic hay - there was later a recall on that particular batch because of poisoning. They had a dignified burial. The budgies lived to be around 9 or 10. We've always had cats and added two dogs. The dogs lived to a good age as did the cats that have since died. My daughter's biology class did the hatch chook eggs thing. My daughter's chick was the only one out of her whole class to survive. We bought another chicken to keep Nugget company. Drumstick was taken by a fox. Nugget ended up going to a chicken retirement home where she became the boss and survived another fox attack. She was a tough chook. My dogs [both large] were terrified of her.
I think that you don't get any pets for your kids that you won't be able to look after, yourself.

we had one hamster when i was a kid, before baby sister was born, i still feel guilty about poor gordon. i fed him chocolate and he died. up until my momma got sick when i was 15, we always had dogs and salamanders. we were townies, so we had to have a proper kennel license, since we never had less than 5 dogs, lol! the salamanders were mine and my brother's, we caught them in the woods at my grandmonster's house. our first pair lived 4 years( which is REALLY LONG for salamanders) and we raised many litters and gave them away or sold them to the pet shop until my brother went to college when i was 14. at that point, school and stuff kept me too busy, so we sold the rest to the pet shop. baby sister was a cat person from birth, she loved them. my da was NOT a cat person. but when this straggly, ugly calico kitten that barked " followed her home" when she was 5, he gave in. kitter lived to a ripe old age, she died a few months before stacy had the twins at age 21. my friend robin had a chipmunk for years, he ran away when rob's parents kicked her out for getting pregnant. we like to think that her later generations are still the critters in her bitch mother's walls, lol! SHE still hears them!

When I was a kid we had (what I now realise was) a succession of blue budgies who were all imaginatively named Bluey. I do remember wondering why his plumage randomly changed sometimes. I think it may have had something to do with his cage hanging above the kerosene heater in the kitchen.
#3 son had a pet blue tongue at one stage that he kept in an old aquarium. He decided one day that Bluey (again with the name!) might like to spend the day out on the deck enjoying the sunshine. Unfortunately the day got a bit hotter than expected and Bluey got “cooked”.
Another time we had a budgie (named Bessie this time so she should have been safe) and a cat. Bessie’s cage hung near our dining table and one evening when we were all sitting around eating, Bessie suddenly fell off her perch, dead! Himself and I spun some yarn to the kids about her being tired and having a little sleep and just get on and eat your dinner. We think the cat had earlier tried to get at her and shocked her to death.

My mum had a canary that would faint. That reminds me of a guinea pig I used to have called Taffy. She was a really long haired one. We got her from a petting zoo.............she was a gorgeous guinea pig. But she had mange. Back then I didn't know how to treat it myself............so I took Taffy to the vets. She was very tame..........and oved attention. So it wasn't a problem for the vet to handle her. She said all Taffy needed was an injection of Ivamex She put the needle in carefully.........and not a peep from Taffy. As soon as she took her hand away Taffy flopped down on her side. The vet and I looked at each other. We both thought she was dead. I said to the vet...........that wasn't suppose to happen ....was it? She said NO. She tapped Taffy a few times...........and Taffy got up. She had only fainted. And it cost my $86................when all I needed to do was to put a drop of Spoton on her neck. I never had to take a guinea pig to the vet again.

Yes another dave..an Aussie from CR forum - Crossroads.. He doesn't post on the Round Up.
Hopefully, he has distanced himself totally from the creepo posters on CR now..since they started posting photos of 2 posters from here on DH (photos of the actual posters..one stolen from private fb a/c). Which earnt one of those posting photos a well deserved perm ban from The Round Up.
